Capturing Nature #5DaysOfNatureStudy {Not Back to School Blog Hop}

Now you know a little about what nature study is, why study nature, and some of the resources and tools for nature study, let's discuss a little about how to capture nature.

Yes, the most obvious method for capturing nature is photography. Incidentally, this is my most favorite method of capturing nature (or my kids, our pets, or just about anything else!). I've passed that love of photography on to at least a couple of my offspring.

Ah, yes; see what I did there? I captured my daughter, capturing nature! <grin>

But you don't have to have a DSLR camera like we do. You can simply use your phone to take photos. Or an iPad, or Kindle, or iPod (you get the picture! Oh! Pun! Fun!).

You can then make digital nature journals. Or you can print the photos, and place them in a physical nature journal.

Another favorite method of capturing nature is drawing, sketching, painting (especially watercolors), drawing with colored pencils, into a nature journal. Your nature journal can be as inexpensive as a sketch pad picked up from Dollar Tree, to as fancy and durable as a leather-bound blank book from Barnes & Noble.

A favorite resource among homeschoolers to emulate for nature journals is The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, by Edith Holden.

One can always capture nature, by capturing live specimens, as well: flowers in a flower press; butterflies and other insects with nets or collection containers; collecting seeds, sea shells, tree leaves, etc. Record bird songs, thunder and rain, the sound of ocean waves. Video a Gopher Tortoise ambling across your yard.
