Liam led Ella to the chair, sat her down, and knelt on one knee beside her so they were eye to eye. “Ye are making a poor choice, lass. Dinnae marry that vile man. Ye have no idea what awaits ye.” Liam speared her with eyes the color of rich mahogany.

Ella jutted her chin. “Maybe not, but I know what awaits me at Skelton House, even if I could return—and I can’t. What should I do? Join the orphans and be homeless? Poor, unmarried women have no value in the eyes of men except one use, and I will not do that. What will become of us unless I can provide?”

“I’m not in a position right now to provide for them, but soon I will be.” Liam had never expressed a personal interest in the children. “We’ll make sure they are taken care of.”

“Is there a ‘we,’ Liam?”

“Yes.” Liam clasped Ella’s hands in his. The rough hands of a working man. Calloused. Strong. “I care about what happens to ye and the children.”

No one before had truly concerned themselves for Ella’s little band of orphans. The stench of poverty clung to them as surely as their soiled, tattered clothing. It cloaked their true worth, and other adults had cast them aside like potato peels. Ella was their only hope. She would not—must not—fail them, no matter the personal danger.

My Thoughts

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you have heard me say that historical fiction is my favorite genre. Since I have English/Scot ancestry, I am always eager to read stories set in these locations.

The Heir's Beloved is set in Elizabethan England, and has a wisp of a Cinderella taste. There are knights and dukes and villains, along with a damsel in distress, and orphaned children. 

Dragomir uses highly descriptive language, which makes it easy to picture the scenes and actions, and carried me deep into the story. I wanted to keep reading, to find out what happens to Liam and Ella, and how their faith helped them overcome obstacles.

If you enjoy historical fiction with knights, dukes, damsels, and a Cinderella vibe, you must add this to your TBR list.
