Birdwatching

One of my most favorite things to do is birdwatching.

The other day, I spent several minutes watching a couple of male hummingbirds squabbling over the feeder. They are rather territorial little creatures!

When we lived in Mississippi, we were on the hummingbird migration route. Every autumn, we were swarmed by hummingbirds, for 6-8 weeks. We would go through several pounds of sugar each season. I miss those hummingbirds!

Here in Florida, the Sandhill Cranes spend the winter. Some are even here year around. It's always a joy to hear them in the mornings during my walks. Sometimes I can even catch a flyover!

Some of my favorite birds to watch are: hummingbirds, chickadees, titmice, cardinals, woodpeckers. I like to watch birds catch the thermals, and soar high in the sky (around here, those are mostly the vultures).

I like having birdfeeders up, to feed the birds. It brings me great pleasure and joy to watch them. But we have outdoor cats now, and I don't want to cause the cats to have such easy prey.
