My Thoughts
I find Verse by Verse: A Daily Devotional Through the Whole Bible — Volume 1 to be an in-depth study and devotional. Beginning in Genesis, the author takes one verse at a time, and provides a devotional thought. His research is impressive, and his insight is inspiring.
A couple examples I found interesting:
The first regarding Genesis 2:2 “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.”
"So what does it mean that God “rested”? His rest is not about recovery; it is about satisfaction. Creation was complete, perfect in its order and goodness, and God ceased His work to set apart this day as holy."
He goes on to state that the Sabbath is a declaration that the work of creation is finished, and it's good. Also that the Sabbath was sanctified, not because God needs it, but because humanity needs it. It's a "rhythm woven in to creation."
The second example I find compelling is regarding Genesis 2:3 “And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.”
"The seventh day is set apart, sanctified, and made holy— a rhythm established from the very beginning. This moment teaches us that rest is an essential part of life. God’s rest models for humanity a rhythm of work and restoration."
He goes on to state that God wants us to honor rest, to have that same balance and completeness that God demonstrated at creation.
If you are interested in having a deep-dive into God's word, this verse by verse devotional would be an excellent choice to add to your daily Bible study time.
