Excerpt 1
Shawn Adjusts His Dating Profile
From Chapter 2
On the bus ride to work, something urgent pressed against his chest. His grandma
wouldn’t be around forever to take care of him, to help him navigate the world, to
believe in his future when he couldn’t believe in it himself.
He pulled out his phone and opened his dating profile. He crafted a new introductory
message, more honest than any he’d written before: Looking for someone who
understands that love isn’t perfect, but it’s worth fighting for. Someone who won’t give
up on me when I can’t always give them what they expect. I’m autistic, I struggle with
social cues, and I might accidentally hurt your feelings. But I’ll love you with
everything I have.
He stared at what he wrote for a long moment. His finger hovered over the submit
button. This is who I am. Shouldn’t someone know that from the start? But he
remembered Lindsay’s face when he’d mentioned being on the spectrum, the way her
smile had shifted from genuine to polite. He remembered Emily throwing water at him
and Anna walking away mid-conversation.
He deleted the words. Too much truth for a first message. Maybe too much truth,
period.
Instead, he simply wrote: “Hi.”
And started searching again.

Shawn And Violet First Meet
From Chapter 3
“H-hey,” he managed, pointing to her white tube top. “White is the color of all
wavelengths of visible light. People think black is all colors, but black is the absence of
color.”
She tilted her head, curious, then blew a green bubble until it popped. Wiping the
gum back into her mouth, she looked him up and down. “I’m Violet.”
Shawn stood taller. “A color on the higher end of the visible spectrum. I’m Shawn.
Would you like to go on a date with me?”
Violet laughed. “You always that quick?” She combed her fingers through her hair.
“We can go someplace right now.” She popped another bubble.
“I can’t right now.”
“We can do later, but it’ll cost you.” She winked. “You’re at a pimps and hoes party.
Talking to an actual ‘ho.’”
He shook his head, confused. “I’m not good at pretend.”
Violet stroked her neck. “And I’m good at everything as long as I’m paid by the hour.”
“I used to be paid by the hour. Now I’m on salary.”
“Three hundred an hour. But I promise I’m worth it.” Green bubble, pop.
Shawn’s eyes widened with curiosity. “What do you do to earn that much?”
“Like I said. Everything.” She licked her upper lip, and Shawn wondered if she was
thirsty.
He mentally checked his calendar. “You free Saturday night?”
She moved closer, minty breath washing over him as she traced her tube top’s edge.
“That’s my most popular night. What time do you wanna start?”

On A Date
From Chapter 8
A gentle smile lit Shawn’s face. “I could never go to auditions. Or act. For anything.
You’re very brave.”
She smirked, bitterness rising. “Or crazy.” It amazed her that he still believed her
story, but she appreciated her precious moments of being treated like anyone else
before she had to raise her walls again and lose that brief taste of normalcy.
He looked into her eyes. “You’re a different wavelength.”
Violet tilted her head. “What do you mean?”
Shawn paused, studying her with careful attention. “There are colors we can’t see.
Beauty that’s outside our visible spectrum. There’s a lot about you that’s not visible to
me yet. But I can tell it’s going to be . . . beautiful.”
Violet’s composure began to slip, but she gathered it back like armor, years of
practice helping her maintain control. She wasn’t used to hearing kind words that didn’t
come with strings attached, or weren’t weapons disguised as compliments. Long ago,
she’d learned not to trust what people said, but something in Shawn’s voice made her
want to believe him.
“Can we try the hug again?” she asked, taking a tentative step forward. He pulled
back. “What if I hug you gently?” She tried to put her arms around him, but he stepped
away and looked down at the sidewalk. She waited a moment, patient. “Can you give
me a hug?”
He looked up, uncertainty written across his face. Scooting a little closer to Violet, he
carefully put his arms around her, creating a circle that held her without touching.
She had never experienced someone being so close without making contact. It felt
more intimate than any embrace she’d known.
