ARTistic Pursuits, Drawing With Graphite Pencils {Homeschool Review Crew}

One of my favorite subjects is art (not that I'm a very good artist or anything). Art and art appreciation are subjects for which I've always tried to help my children develop a love. And I've always loved that ARTistic Pursuits covers both art appreciation and art techniques. Today I am sharing my thoughts on the Beginner Level, Art Core 1, Drawing with Graphite Pencils, which is designed for students grade four through adult.
This course includes a 64-page hardcover book, with DVD and Blu-ray discs. You can also access the same information via online lessons. In other words, you have the option of the book with DVDs, online course, or both combined.The course is made up of nine units; each unit has four lessons. Lesson one discusses art materials. Lesson two covers creativity. Lesson three is art appreciation. And lesson four is the master lesson.
Topics covered:
- Line
- Space
- Shape
- Texture
- Value
- Form
- Animal forms
- Man made forms
The suggested schedule is two lessons per week, and plan for about an hour per lesson.
I like that there is a list of needed art materials on the table of contents page, so you can see at a quick glance what supplies you need to pick up before even beginning the course. I also love that art appreciation and art history are included in all of ARTistic Pursuits courses.

Our current household consists of my 18 year old son (who is still homeschooling), my 27 year old daughter (homeschool graduate) and me. We all were eager to try the book and video lessons (rather than online, because of our internet service), because we like the idea of being able to stick the DVD into the player and watch it on our television.
My daughter and I had to make an unexpected trip out of state in March. While we were gone, my dad was taken to the hospital (we live just around the corner from my parents, who are both in their mid-eighties, and both with serious health issues). Also, all three of us have jobs. So it was a major challenge, trying to find time to work on this course. I like to hope that, little by little, at least SJ and I will be able to work our way through the whole book. I think it will be a fun, relaxing, creative outlet for each of us.
If you are looking for an easy-to-follow and simple to understand art course for your students, or even for yourself, either Beginner Level, Art Core 1, Drawing with Graphite Pencils or Beginner Level, Art Core 2, Painting with Watercolor Pencils would be the perfect choice!
