Q is for Quail {Blogging Through the Alphabet}

When I was growing up, during our visits to my grandparents' (which is now the house in which my parents live, and is around the corner from where I now live) in the summer, one of my favorite birds to listen for was the Northern Bobwhite.

Then when we moved here from Montana, it was an exciting pleasure to hear them, and occasionally see some.

I have noticed, though, since we moved back here from Mississippi, I rarely hear or see them anymore. I find that so sad! The Cornell Lab of Ornithology states that the Northern Bobwhite is in "steep decline." Several years ago they published an article: Can Birders Join Hunters to Save the Northern Bobwhite?
The National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative is trying to help.

As you know, there are other species of new world quails.
Mountain Quail
Scaled Quail
California Quail
Gambel's Quail
Montezuma Quail

  1. I hope they are able to save the bobwhite...would be too bad to lose them.
