H is for Hummingbirds {Blogging Through the Alphabet}

Anyone who knows me, even a little, should also know that among my favorite birds, hummingbirds are among my most favorite. This time I will mostly share photos, videos, and maybe a few links to more information.

There are approximately 340 species of hummingbirds, which can be found only in the Americas. There are not quite two dozen in the United States and Canada. Only the Ruby-throated Hummingbird breeds east of the Mississippi River.

One thing I honestly do miss about living where we were in Mississippi is that we were on the migration route for the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. They always brought such joy to my heart each fall, when they would swarm our feeders. We would go through large amounts of sugar each season! (These photos were originally shared on my old blog, as noted by the watermark)

Recently, my parents visited Costa Rica, and were able to see several different species of hummingbirds. Maybe some day I can make a trip to Central or South America to see more hummingbirds myself. (All photos below taken by their tour guide, Christian)

  1. I enjoy the hummers, too. My parents live in a part of New Mexico where the hummers almost always arrive April 1. This year, they were right on schedule. Unfortunately, the snows were not done yet and my parents took some beautiful videos of the hummers amid the snowflakes.

  2. I love hummingbirds! I have seen a few in our area before but not too frequently.
